Biographie

Guy Canivet is a graduate of the École nationale de la magistrature and has a degree in private law and criminal science. In 1967, he became an auditor of justice, an examining magistrate (Chartres) in 1972, in 1975 deputy public prosecutor at the Paris District Court, in 1978 general secretary to the president of the Paris District Court, in 1983 first judge at the Paris District Court, between 1984 and 1987 he was assigned to the first president of the Court of Cassation (Simone Rozès), between 1985 and 1986 he was vice-president of the Paris District Court, then between 1986 and 1991 he was an advisor to the Paris Court of Appeal. Between 1987 and 1988 he was an auditor at the 40th session of the Institut des hautes études de défense nationale (IHEDN), in 1991 he became President of a chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal, in 1994 / 1996: Counselor at the Court of Cassation, in 1994 / 2004: Associate Professor at the University of Paris V-René Descartes, in 1996: First President of the Court of Appeal of Paris and in 1999 he became First President of the Court of Cassation Between 1999 and 2000, Guy Canivet was President of the working group set up by the Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice (Elizabeth Guigou) to study the question of external control of the prison administration by an independent body, and then between 1999 and 2003 he was President of the Society for Comparative Legislation. Between 2001 and 2003, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ecole Nationale d’Administration Pénitentiaire, then between 2004 and 2007 he was an associate professor at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, specializing in competition law (competition law applied to sports since 2006). In 2004 he became Founder and President of the Association of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union and in 2005 he became a member of the Club des Amis de la LOLF. In 2006 he became a member of the British Academy and between 2006 and 2007 he was entrusted by the Minister of Justice (Pascal Clément) with a mission of reflection on the means of training magistrates likely to exercise the functions of heads of court or jurisdiction. Guy Canivet is an Officer (2000) and then Commander of the Legion of Honor (2006). He is Officer of the National Order of Merit (1998), Commander of the Academic Palms, Commander of Arts and Letters (2007), Doctor honoris causa of the Universities of London (Great Britain), Laval (Quebec – 2004), Manila (Philippines – 2006), Sofia (Bulgaria – 2004), Tulane and New Orleans (USA – 2008) and Leicester (UK – 2009). He is finally Honorary Bencher of Gray’s Inn.
