Marko Bošnjak served as President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) from July 2024 to May 2025. He graduated in law from the University of Ljubljana (1996) and was a research fellow (1996-2002), scientific collaborator (2002-2006) and then head of the Scientific Council (2006-2008) of the Institute of Criminology at the University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Law).
Biographie
A judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) since 2016, Marko Bošnjak served as its president from July 2024 to May 2025.
He graduated in law from the University of Ljubljana (1996) and was a research fellow (1996-2002), scientific collaborator (2002-2006) and then head of the Scientific Council (2006-2008) of the Institute of Criminology at the University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Law).
He holds a doctorate in law (University of Ljubljana, 2002). He was an independent advisor (2002-2006) and then senior advisor (2006-2008) to the Constitutional Court of Slovenia.
He was a lecturer in criminal law and criminology at the University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Law) between 2005 and 2015 and at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana between 2006 and 2012. He has also been an associate professor of criminal law at the Faculty of European Law in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, since 2012.
