Judith Shapiro is the director of the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development dual degree at the School of International Service at American University in Washington, DC. She is also a researcher and teacher. Her work focuses on global, Asian, and Chinese environmental politics, particularly under Mao. Her current research interests include the political and social dynamics of environmental degradation and the outlook for sustainable development in China.
She holds an MA in Asian Studies from the University of California at Berkley, an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and a PhD in International Relations from American University.
