Laurent Fabius joined the French Socialist Party in 1974 and became deputy mayor of Grand-Quevilly in 1977. He served as a member of parliament for the Seine-Maritime region and then became chief of staff to French President François Mitterrand in 1979. He first became a member of the government as Deputy Minister for the Budget. He became Prime Minister in 1984, the youngest in the history of the Fifth Republic, being only 37 years old at the time.

He first became a member of the government as Deputy Minister for the Budget. He became Prime Minister in 1984, the youngest in the history of the Fifth Republic, being only 37 years old at the time.
Laurent Fabius went on to become the first secretary of the Socialist Party, president of the Socialist group in the National Assembly, and President of the National Assembly.
He was Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry between 2000 and 2002 and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development between 2012 and 2016.
On February 19, 2016, he was appointed President of the Constitutional Council by François Hollande. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 2017.
He is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Sciences Po Paris and the ENA.
